A Part of the Valley’s homesteading history…
This historic cabin was built in 1911 as one of the original homesteaded cabins on what is now The National Elk Refuge. It was moved to 560 E Hansen in the 1970s, but almost didn’t make it.
According to word of mouth history, after the federal government bought the land were the cabin was sitting, the plan was to burn it, as was common place for many of the old homestead cabins.
However, bad weather delayed the destruction and ended up saving the structure. In December, the weekend before they were going to burn the cabin, it snowed, making it possible to put the cabin on snow skis and skiing it off the land.
The cabin was moved to land that is now part of St. John’s Medical Center, before making its way to 560 E Hansen in the 1970s.
The builder of the cabin was known for his recognizable style – atypical square corners on the building, versus the usual protruding criss-crossed logs.
